Bilateral stenosis or occlusion of the internal carotid arteries caused by arteriosclerosis is found frequently by arteriography.Sometimes collateral circulation is sufficient to maintain cerebral function with few or no neurological symptoms.Congenital absence or hypoplasia of the internal carotid artery is extremely rare.We have studied a patient with small internal carotid arteries which we believe have resulted from developmental hypoplasia.Clinical,arteriographic,and postmortem studies which support this interpretation are the basis of this report. |
